CBD for Cats: How it Works and Top 10 Benefits

CBD Benefits for Cats

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring compound found in the cannabis plant. It offers all-natural relief from inflammation, arthritis, anxiety, and more. Plus, it is entirely safe for felines when used correctly. It is one of the best alternatives to pharmaceutical drugs for cat health issues. CBD can help treat many common health conditions that cats suffer from, such as psoriasis, anxiety, and arthritis. Although cats can benefit from CBD like humans, their experiences are different. Many pet owners in Australia now use CBD daily with their cats. In this article, we’ll discuss how CBD helps cats, why you might use it with your cat, and tips on buying and using it with cats.

What is CBD?

CBD Oil for Cats

CBD is a natural extract from the hemp plant that is produced organically. Hemp has naturally produced chemicals called cannabinoids, which have many beneficial properties in both humans and cats. However, not all cannabinoids can be used by felines. THC, one of the main cannabinoids from hemp, is toxic for many animals like cats and shouldn’t be given to them. CBD is the other primary cannabinoid found in high quantities in plants, but it is therapeutic and helpful for assisting with many chronic health issues pets encounter.

How CBD Works in Cats

Cat

Scientists have identified hundreds of cannabinoid compounds in hemp, each carrying distinct but beneficial effects. CBD is one of the most popular as it has a direct capacity to lower stress and anxiety, promote calmness, and help with inflammatory issues in cats. The endocannabinoid system, or ECS, is crucial to its delivery of helpful effects, which is present in all cats and influences their metabolism, immunity, and homeostasis. Because of this, CBD can improve a cat’s health in various ways. It’s able to support improvements in mental and physical ailments.

Cannabidiol interacts with the endocannabinoid system in cats by stimulating the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the cat’s brain and body tissues, triggering the production and release of the beneficial endocannabinoids. Several main endocannabinoids offer cats the most health benefits. In particular, anandamide and 2-AG are potent in their anti-inflammatory and therapeutic effects. Both help to promote calm in your cat, which leads to behavioural improvements.

Does CBD Get Cats High?

CBD (when pure) is safe for cats and won’t get them high. It is entirely different from THC. THC is another cannabinoid that also occurs in cannabis and is responsible for its renowned ‘high’. It is highly toxic to pets, including cats. Never give your cat THC. It can cause liver toxicity and poisoning.

Benefits of CBD for Cats

While the research is still early, what we do know is that CBD has several health benefits in cats that can be confirmed by cat owners anecdotally. Let’s run through and describe the top 10 benefits it has in felines.

Reducing Arthritis

Like in humans, CBD is known to assist some cats with arthritis symptoms. This is good news, as arthritis is prevalent in cats. It mainly affects older cats. More than 70% of cats aged 12 and over have some form of arthritis. It’s an inflammatory condition that afflicts the joints. Symptoms caused include joint pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion. For cats, it most commonly occurs in their knee joints and can impact their ability to play or exercise. When arthritis strikes, it’s often chronic and worsens over time.

Arthritis is painful. It can cause joint swelling and chronic pain. This is particularly the case with osteoarthritis. CBD can reduce inflammation resulting from arthritis. It also helps to block the sensations triggered by the nerve pain receptors, helping soothe ongoing arthritis pain. It can support many cats in regaining movement, mitigating pain, and improving their quality of life.

Cats love to jump, climb and run. This movement keeps them active and healthy. To maintain a healthy life, your cat needs to keep moving. But stiff joints from arthritis will limit your cat’s ability to move, lowering their confidence and leading to weight gain or other health problems. Avoiding this stiffness and boosting mobility is another benefit CBD can offer. In cats, this is great to help them regain their running and get healthy again.

Stress and Anxiety in Cats

Like in humans, CBD benefits cats by helping them stay calm, build resilience against stressors and avoid anxious feelings. Cats are susceptible to anxiety and stress in similar ways to us. Both environmental and genetic factors can cause this. These factors are often related to fears and phobias in cats. Many cats are easily frightened by loud noises, cars, or dogs, which can cause anxiety with too much exposure. Stress occurs via the cat’s fight-or-flight response. It causes the release of cortisol, the stress hormone. Cortisol can cause weight gain, reduced muscle mass, lowered immunity, and other health issues.

CBD helps to lower anxiety in cats through the endocannabinoid system. This system has mechanisms by which it can soothe the stress response and make pets more resilient to its trigger. It can also help your cat’s mood, enabling it to remain calm. As a result, it will be less likely to get spooked by loud noises or dogs. Many cat owners in Australia have anecdotally noted they’ve seen a positive change in their cats’ behaviour after using CBD for their cat’s anxiety. For example, cats are often seen to exhibit less scratching and biting behaviours that are associated with heightened stress levels.

Anxiety and Stress Reduction: CBD can help reduce anxiety and stress in cats, making it beneficial for pets dealing with separation anxiety, noise phobias, or travel-related stress.

Epilepsy and Seizures

The most well-researched effect of CBD in humans is its noted improvement in seizure strength and frequency for individuals who have epilepsy. Based on existing research, whether this effect transfers to cats is not yet apparent. Seizures are caused by conditions in the brain that result in neurons firing incorrectly and motor neurons over-firing, which causes the body to become unresponsive. It can occur in pets like cats, too. CBD reduces the severity of seizures in humans. This includes their length and frequency, enabling users to obtain improved quality of life. There is minimal research to date, specifically on epilepsy in cats. It may provide some relief, although we only have anecdotes from cat owners to suggest so.

Soothing Cat Skin and Fur

CBD soothes the inflammation response in the skin via the CB2 receptors in cats. This is helpful for pets who suffer from dry skin or psoriasis. Many synthetic types of cat litter can irritate your cat’s skin and cause red blemishes. Chronic inflammation from irritants is psoriasis. It is an autoimmune condition where the cat’s body produces excess skin cells in response to the allergens it’s exposed to. Anti-inflammatory products like CBD for cats help calm or downregulate this immune response to soothe the skin.

CBD oil also contains healthy fatty acids and omega-3 long-chain fats. This is because it’s derived from hemp. The plant is rich in these nourishing fats that can keep your cat’s skin healthy. Each improves skin resilience and oil balance and helps with skin repair. Hemp oil can be topically applied to a cat’s skin or fur to enrich the nutrients on the skin’s surface while also boosting the health of underlying layers. It’ll keep your cat’s fur smooth, strong, and shiny. We like to use CBD oil and jojoba daily for our cat’s fur health and sheen.

Inflammation and Gut Health in Cats

CBD is anti-inflammatory and aids with inflammatory symptoms in cats. This is great as inflammation is responsible for many chronic health conditions in felines. An example is gut problems like colitis or IBS. Pets like cats can suffer from gastrointestinal disorders, with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) being particularly common. Studies have now shown that cannabinoids can be helpful for many stomach issues due to their anti-inflammatory properties. For example, CBD and CBG help to reduce gastrointestinal inflammation via the CB2 receptors in the stomach lining and intestine. These can help to calm down the inflammation response caused by colitis. CBD has an added benefit here via its pain-blocking mechanisms. It can help relieve inflammation in cats while relieving the discomfort associated with inflamed areas through its pain-suppressing characteristics. But hemp products also contain a range of nutrients that support gut health. Antioxidants like beta-carotene and lignans may also play a role in calming the stomach and protecting cells from becoming inflamed.

Cats can become afflicted with many other issues of the gastrointestinal system. Most of these issues are caused by inflammatory problems. Allergens like bacteria or chronic imbalances in gut flora can result in your cat’s gut becoming irritated. Over time, these problems can worsen. Your cat may have symptoms of these issues, like diarrhoea, meowing, constipation, or blood in their stool. CBD can help with these issues. It soothes the gut through anti-microbial action and interactions with cannabinoid receptors in the gut lining. A recent study from Queensland University in Australia showed CBD had antibacterial and anti-microbial properties. This may be how it soothes uncomfortable bloating from issues like irritable bowel syndrome or colitis in cats.

Mood and Behaviour

Most cat owners report their cat becoming more well-behaved, less irritable and obedient after starting with CBD. It’s good news, as mood and discipline can be significant problems in many cats. Cats can even get disorders such as obsessive-compulsive or antisocial personality similar to humans. These conditions in animals can be debilitating, as they may involve self-mutilation or chronic repetitive behaviours. It can lead to less interaction with their owners, reduced happiness and even eating problems. Anecdotal reports from people with OCD suggest that CBD reduces the intensity of their symptoms. Even at low doses, it has decreased repetitive behaviour in rats. This is likely also the case for other pets like cats. CB1 receptors in the cat’s brain and CBD’s interaction with them may explain the improved mood and confidence.

Diabetes in Cats

Cats can get diabetes, which impairs the natural insulin response critical in food processing sugars. The condition is hard to control, and many owners can’t adjust to the high stress and needs of treating a diabetic pet. Cannabinoids from hemp may offer some assistance. CBD’s role in homeostasis may help in supporting pancreas function. This is a very new area of research and not well-understood yet in cats, though. Interestingly, compared to non-users, human CBD users have a lower average weight, lower fasting insulin, and better insulin sensitivity.

Chronic inflammation plays a vital role in the development of type 2 diabetes. CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties may lessen inflammation and reduce the chance of developing it. CBD has been shown to reduce the incidence of diabetes in normal-weight mice in studies. It may suppress the symptoms of diabetes. A second cannabinoid, THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin), has also been shown to combat diabetes. A 2013 study reported that THCV reduces glucose intolerance, improving the user’s insulin profile and liver triglyceride levels. Each of these effects is beneficial to mitigating the condition. Whether it works for pets like cats with diabetes is difficult to ascertain currently.

Neuroprotection

Cats can experience neurodegeneration and associated diseases like Alzheimer’s. This loss of mental abilities accelerates with age. Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome is considered the animal equivalent of Alzheimer’s disease in humans. Pets affected by this disorder exhibit dramatically reduced functioning of the brain. Like with Alzheimer’s, it is caused by plaque build-up along the microglia or brain cell pathways. It’s an inflammatory condition. The plaque eventually slows down the passage of electrical signals and reduces cognitive ability. There are also some indications CBD can aid in preventing this decline through CB1 receptor activity. Some cat owners have reported mitigation of memory loss in their pets when administered, although these reports are anecdotal.

While limited, there is evidence CBD can aid in protecting neurons and mitigating mental decline. Many cannabinoids, such as CBG and CBD, display neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. These are important in supporting the microglia. A three-month study on dogs recently indicated CBD was able to significantly reduce the incidence and length of seizures by around 30%. This is also seen in human applications of CBD for epilepsy. It is so effective for this purpose it is even being used in new epilepsy drugs to support those suffering from this condition. These neuroprotective properties may also apply to cats, but the full extent of this benefit still needs to be clarified. CB1 receptors are abundant in cat, horse, and dog brains, which may provide the pathway for this therapeutic response via endocannabinoids.

Immunity

Cannabinoids can influence much of the immune system, which contains CB2 cannabinoid receptors in the lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are critical immune system signalling pathways, regulating the cells and activity responsible for fighting infection throughout the body. In 2022, it was discovered that CBG and CBDA assist in preventing and combating COVID in humans. This is merely one example of where cannabinoids have been identified as having antiviral or anti-microbial properties. It is theorised that they may help the T cells (white blood cells) and the body fight pathogens. This may occur through the endocannabinoid system’s interactions with our immune system. The exact pathways these use are not yet apparent. Many of the same effects are suspected to occur in pets like cats. It is likely tied to the ability of CBD and other cannabinoids to aid in inflammation reduction. Many autoimmune conditions like psoriasis are caused by excessive immune activity. CBD helps in downregulating and balancing this activity to soothe the disorders it causes.

Evidence for CBD’s Benefits for Cats

To date, few clinical studies have specifically targeted demonstrating the efficacy of CBD in cats and understanding its benefits for them. Most research on CBD’s effects on animals has centred on dogs and horses. However, there are some early signs that it’s powerful at improving feline health and assisting with many conditions based on early trials.

Most initial studies have indicated CBD is safe and provides some benefits, while THC is toxic. A study in 2021 experimented on 20 healthy cats with both CBD and THC oil formulations to assess safety and adverse reactions. It found that oils containing THC were more likely to cause adverse reactions like ataxia and lethargy in cats than those with CBD only. Those containing CBD alone didn’t display adverse effects compared to placebo. A 2020 study published in ‘Frontiers in Veterinary Science’ on cats suffering from osteoarthritis found CBD aided in mitigating symptoms of osteoarthritis and helped boost quality of life. Cats dosed with CBD daily had significantly lower pain scores and showed improved mobility, activity and mood compared to the placebo group.

Other studies have examined the effects of CBD in pets, such as Colorado State University’s review of CBD’s safety in cats and dogs. While less than 20 subjects were tested, the study period over six weeks used high doses of CBD with each animal. Upwards of 250mg per day of CBD was given to each pet. An outcome of this study was it demonstrated safety and tolerance. CBD displayed no toxicity. It had little effect on each animal’s liver and could be absorbed readily. However, some minor side effects were noted, such as an upset stomach for dogs and excessive licking or head-shaking with some cats. Researchers concluded that providing the product to these types of pets was safe, providing the correct dosages were used, and no other medications were simultaneously taken. The pets had no underlying conditions or liver problems.

Types of CBD Products for Cats

CBD Treats for Cats

There is an enormous variety of cat CBD products in the market today. Let’s look at the main ways you can give your cat CBD and some of their trade-offs. All products will have high bioavailability and be easily absorbed through the endocannabinoid system.

CBD Oils for Cats

Cats can be given CBD straight from a dropper. This is great as it’s easy to control the dose by the drop and is quickly absorbed. You can even mix the drops into food to make consuming it easier. The downside is that oil is often unpalatable and challenging for pets to swallow. Some animals do enjoy oil, though, because of its fat content. Hemp is rich in ALA, GLA, and polyunsaturated fats.

CBD Capsules for Cats

CBD capsules are another way to give cats CBD orally and can be incorporated into a cat’s feed. Similarly to oil, it is easy to control dosage this way as each capsule will contain a pre-measured quantity of CBD. Avoid buying large capsules as they can be challenging for the cat to chew, and it may spit them out. Capsules will be a bit slower to absorb as they must be digested via the gut.

CBD Cat Treats

Many cats are very picky eaters and fussy about what they will consume. This can be frustrating when trying to give them CBD, which has its flavour. Using cat treats infused with CBD is a way to get around this issue, being easy to consume for cats and mimicking their natural diet as an ingestion medium. Treats are tasty for cats while being convenient. They are easy to dose because each has a specific amount of CBD. They often come in many flavours and textures, meaning you can seek a treat type that your cat will enjoy.

CBD Topicals for Cats

Creams, balms or ointments infused with CBD are another way to give your cat CBD through its fur or skin. They are more useful for skin conditions, dry fur or psoriasis but can even be targeted at localised pain from arthritis. Creams are great for relief in a particular skin or fur region, but you must ensure your cat doesn’t lick them off.

Choosing a CBD Product for Your Cat

There isn’t a single ‘best’ option when choosing a CBD product for your cat. Each product type will have its benefits and drawbacks. Your cat’s circumstances, needs and preferences will determine your product choice. Let’s look at some key considerations to factor into your selection of products for your cat.

Avoid THC

While pure CBD alone is safe for cats, THC isn’t. It’s the other prominent cannabinoid found in hemp, which is often found in or contaminates CBD products for pets incidentally. THC is toxic to pets like cats. Ensure you don’t purchase a product containing THC or a low-quality CBD oil that could be contaminated with it. Only pure CBD products should be given to your cat with 0% THC.

Stay Clear of Additives

Artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners in CBD pet products must be avoided and can be detrimental to your cat’s health. It’s prudent to seek out an organic product that is GMO-free, additive and pesticide-free for your cat. Avoid the nasties and toxins that can cause health problems. Many hemp plants in Australia are treated with carcinogenic herbicides or pesticides, which you can avoid by seeking a reputable and high-quality CBD product for your cat.

Choose CBD Isolate

In CBD products for humans, you’ll typically see two main types of CBD products: full-spectrum and isolate. Each is different and has its own characteristics. Isolate CBD contains a higher purity of CBD, with a low quantity of other nutrients from hemp. This is most useful when you desire higher strengths of CBD or need to eliminate the risk of THC intake. Isolates are more refined and filter out all the plant matter from your CBD product.

In contrast, full-spectrum CBD products for cats are less refined. They’ll contain more cannabinoids like CBG or CBN but also have a higher risk of having non-zero levels of THC. As THC is toxic in cats, it’s best to avoid these products because of this risk. Stick to isolate products unless you can guarantee the full-spectrum product has 0% THC.

A downside of this, however, is that terpenes in full-spectrum CBD products can enhance CBD’s effects. This is known as the entourage effect. It occurs when terpenes improve the uptake of CBD in the cannabinoid receptors. Furthermore, more of the hemp plant’s beneficial compounds include full-spectrum CBD like chlorophyll, flavonoids, and minor cannabinoids such as CBN, CBG, and MEB. Your cat will benefit from multiple different therapeutic compounds instead of just CBD.

Review Ingredients and Source

Always review the source, ingredients and quality of the product you’re buying for your cat. Many low-quality CBD products contain more than 0% THC or are formulated for humans instead of animals. Don’t make the mistake of purchasing anything that could harm your pet. Seek out CO2-extracted CBD products. This gas-based extraction method minimises the risk of contaminating your product with solvents. Solvent extraction has a risk of leaving ethanol or solvent residue in your pet’s CBD product, which is harmful. Gas extraction is also more productive, leading to higher CBD, enabling better health effects for your cat.

Consider Taste

Taste is a significant factor many owners overlook when considering CBD products for their pets. It is one of the more critical factors to plan for, as it will affect your cat’s consistency in taking its CBD. Many cats are fussy eaters and won’t consume oil or products that have a plant-like taste. Most cats prefer CBD treats. These are the tastiest options on the menu. They have a crunchy and delectable flavour that cats enjoy. Cats often reject drops or capsules and consequently won’t be digested. Mixing CBD into delicious food makes it easier for your cat to consume as it masks your cat’s taste.

How to Give CBD to Your Cat

Because of the potential risks involved, it’s essential to always consult with a veterinarian about giving your cat CBD before you do so. They can help check whether CBD is appropriate for your cat, confirm any risk factors, understand the benefits vs risk trade-offs and ensure your cat doesn’t experience adverse reactions with existing medicines.

Dosage

Dosing can be tricky. The correct daily dosages for each cat can differ substantially. Many factors contribute to the amount of CBD your cat will need to see results. These can include its breed and physiology, responsiveness to cannabinoids like CBD, existing health levels, age and weight. Start at a low dose of several drops per day for several weeks and increase if needed to find an appropriate dose level for your pet. More significant symptoms may call for higher doses of CBD to get benefits, while more mild conditions won’t need as much.

Some cats can be pretty sensitive to cannabinoids or even react severely and may experience side effects. For this reason, CBD products designed for pets tend to have lower concentrations of cannabinoids than their human counterparts to avoid detrimental effects on pets. Side effects can include meowing or scratching, vomiting, upset stomach, behavioural changes, nausea and lethargy. Although these are rare and usually pass quickly, you should see your vet if they persist.

Is CBD Safe for Cats?

Pure CBD containing no THC and dosed appropriately is safe for cats. This has been confirmed by anecdotal reports in widespread success stories from cat owners and early research on CBD’s effects on cats. But there are risk factors associated with giving your cat CBD. Let’s look at these risk factors so you can prevent them and ensure you use CBD with your cat safely.

Side Effects

Side effects of CBD for cats are rare, and it’s well tolerated for most pets. These side effects may present themselves through lethargy, more significant irritability, upset stomachs or mood changes. You might also see your cat vomit, display diarrhoea or meow more. To minimise the risk of side effects, start with a low dosage of CBD and increase it over time. Monitor your cat for adverse reactions. More adverse side effects like persistent vomiting or significant shifts in appetite and mood may mean you need to stop doses. Check with your vet if symptoms persist and don’t pass quickly.

Existing Medications

A key risk factor of giving CBD to cats is accidentally mixing it with other medications they’re already using. This is because CBD is processed via the liver, where it’s broken down to be absorbed in the endocannabinoid system. Drugs like dewormers or blood pressure treatments in cats can also affect or impair the liver’s function. If CBD is combined with them, it can significantly increase side effect risks or even pose the potential for poisoning in the worst cases. This is best avoided by checking your cat has no medications that will clash with CBD before giving it to them.

THC Contamination

THC is toxic to cats but can easily find its way into CBD products either accidentally or through mislabelling. This includes pet-formulated products for cats, which can contain greater than zero levels of THC, posing potential health risks for your pet. Ensure you get a 3rd party lab report from an independent lab for the product you purchased for your cat. It will list the cannabinoids contained in the product, including THC. You can use this to confirm your product is safe for your cat and won’t harm them. Many low-quality products use subpar refinement or filtering techniques, increasing the risk of contamination. They could also be mislabeled. Mislabeling can occur accidentally when a supplier doesn’t know the actual quantities of cannabinoids in their product. But it can equally occur intentionally, where cannabinoid content is inflated to make the seller more sales. In either case, you should avoid mislabelled and low-quality products because they are riskier for your cat.

Allergies or Adverse Reactions

Some cats can be susceptible to cannabinoids or even allergic to them in rare cases. If this occurs, you may see them experience more severe side effects or even an allergic reaction. In such cases, the cat may vomit, display hives on their skin or excessive lethargy, and even dizziness. If this occurs, you must stop giving your cat any CBD and get veterinary attention. It’s essential to start with very low doses to test this and ascertain your cat’s sensitivity or potential allergies to CBD. Continuously monitor them and take action if you think it is required.

FAQs

Is CBD good for cats?

CBD helps cats with overall well-being and mitigates conditions such as arthritis, chronic inflammation and anxiety. Its calming effects can also assist with behavioural or mood issues. It’s critical to always use a pet-formulated CBD product with your cat containing no THC, which is toxic to them. You should also be conservative and careful with dosing, starting low and increasing only when you confirm your cat responds well and isn’t sensitive to cannabinoids. Always confirm with your vet before trying CBD with your cat, as they can help manage any risks involved or potential medication interactions.

How long does it take for CBD to work for a cat?

CBD affects each cat differently because of individual metabolism, size, tolerance levels, health and age differences. It usually starts to work within 2-3 hours of dosing but can take up to several weeks to begin showing results. The endocannabinoid system in cats is the primary means by which CBD provides its benefits, but it can take a while to deliver its health-enhancing benefits. If you aren’t seeing results, you can experiment with different doses, products or dose timings to see what works best for your cat.

What do CBD treats do for cats?

CBD treats for cats are designed and formulated to provide CBD in a form that cats will enjoy, mimicking the tastes and textures they prefer in their everyday foods. These products can assist with improving overall health in cats, lower stress or anxiety, help with inflammation, and aid with mood issues. You can give your cat a CBD treat at any time as an alternative to CBD oil or other products they may not enjoy the taste of. Many cats are fussy eaters, making treats a better choice for dosing.

Will CBD put my cat to sleep?

In some cats, CBD can cause lethargy or drowsiness as a side effect, but it shouldn’t result in them sleeping. Most cats feel calmer, more at ease and in a better mood after using CBD for several weeks. Aiding with anxiety and promoting greater calm is the aim of using CBD as opposed to directly putting a cat to sleep.

How do cats feel on CBD?

Most cats feel more at ease, less anxious, plus in a better mood when using CBD. It can help them behave better and respond more to training. For cats in pain, it can help with irritability or mood problems caused by their source of pain. Checking in with your vet and monitoring your cat when using CBD is crucial to success and avoiding adverse side effects.

Is CBD calming for cats?

CBD has anxiolytic properties and calms the nervous system in humans and pets like cats. It can help cats build resilience against stressors, phobias or sources of anxiety. For example, it can aid them in ignoring barking dogs or loud noises. Most cat owners say that their cats show greater calmness and better mood and are easier to handle after using CBD for several weeks.

Can you give cats CBD every day?

CBD is well tolerated and safe in most pets, like cats, making it suitable for daily use. Daily use should help to promote endocannabinoid system activity and the benefits this brings to cats via lower stress, reduced inflammation, plus better immunity. Before giving your cat CBD, ensure you have a plan of action in dosing, monitoring for side effects and have consulted with your veterinarian before beginning. They can help guide you on appropriate doses for your cat and any risks to be aware of.

Does CBD help cats with anxiety and aggression?

If your cat has a personality or mood disorder, CBD likely won’t be able to cure it on its own. It isn’t a fix for mental conditions but rather can help to support better mental state, calmness and overall mood in cats to help them avoid scenarios triggering aggression. Combining CBD with other treatments like additional pet training, behaviour plans, and other tools can help to bring their overall behaviour back in line. It’s best to confirm with your vet the best approach and treatment plan for your cat.

How many drops of CBD should I give my cat?

Dosing CBD for cats can be tricky and requires some thought and pre-planning. You’ll need to consider the cat’s size, weight, potential sensitivities, tolerance level and health status when calculating the amount of CBD your pet might need. In addition, the health or treatment goals you aim to use CBD for with your cat will be an essential factor. For everyday health and stress, lower doses are usually needed than if you’re targeting treatment of a particular condition in your cat, like arthritis.

Conclusion

CBD is an excellent natural supplement for cats, improving their health and supporting various conditions, including inflammatory, immune and neurological disorders. This plant-based solution is well-tolerated and safe, making it an ideal choice for cat owners. While clinical research into the therapeutic benefits of CBD for cats is still in its early days, many cat owners in Australia are already reporting promising results. Over time, CBD may help improve arthritis, mood and behaviour, anxiety, and even skin conditions. When purchasing CBD products for your cat, ensure that they are CO2-extracted and contain 0% THC. Begin with low doses to check for any allergies or sensitivities before increasing. It is also essential to speak with your veterinarian before giving CBD to your cat.
